.TH DEBUGBREAK 1 2026-10-19 "w64devkit" "w64devkit Manual"
.SH NAME
debugbreak \- break every debugged process into its debugger
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B debugbreak
.SH DESCRIPTION
.B debugbreak
raises a breakpoint exception in every process that has a debugger
attached, as though F12 were pressed in each.
Windows provides that hotkey only for graphical programs, so
.B debugbreak
fills the gap for console programs, such as one stuck in an infinite
loop under
.BR gdb (1).
.PP
It visits every process it can open with full access, and calls
.B DebugBreakProcess
on each.
Processes without a debugger are not affected.
.SH OPTIONS
None.
Any argument prints a usage message on standard error, with exit status
1.
.SH EXIT STATUS
.TP
.B 0
Every process was visited.
.TP
.B 1
An argument was given, or the processes could not be listed.
.SH EXAMPLES
Interrupt a console program running under GDB, from a second console:
.PP
.RS 4
.EX
$ debugbreak
.EE
.RE
.PP
GDB stops in a new thread, which Windows creates to deliver the break.
To see where the program was, list the stacks of all threads:
.PP
.RS 4
.EX
(gdb) thread apply all bt
.EE
.RE
.SH NOTES
Every debugged process breaks, not only one.
Processes that
.B debugbreak
cannot open, such as elevated processes when it is not elevated, are
skipped.
