954f0f4678 Don't use CFLAGS user variable for warnings or pthread options. 
Instead, use AM_CFLAGS or foo_CFLAGS. CFLAGS appears after AM_CFLAGS
in automake rules. Therefore, the user could supersede any switch.

7142c0d2e0 Don't interrupt COMPAT_OSNAME log with other checks. Avoid searching for windres when not building for Windows. Remove --without-windres flag, previously used as a workaround.
