This allows "x" to be appended to any psql list-like meta-command,
forcing its output to be displayed in expanded mode. This improves
readability in cases where the output is very wide. For example,
"\dfx+" (or equivalently "\df+x") will produce a list of functions,
with additional details, in expanded mode.
This works with all \d* meta-commands, plus \l, \z, and \lo_list, with
the one exception that the expanded mode option "x" cannot be appended
to "\d" by itself, since "\dx" already means something else.

This allows users to determine whether particular functions are
leakproof, and whether the underlying functions used by operators and
casts are leakproof. This is useful to determine whether indexes can
be used in queries on security barrier views or tables with row-level
security policies.

Since backslash is (typically) not special in CSV data, we should
not be treating \. as special either. The server historically did
this to keep CSV and TEXT modes more alike and to support V2 protocol;
but V2 protocol is long dead, and the inconsistency with CSV standards
is annoying. Remove that behavior in CopyReadLineText, and make some
minor consequent code simplifications.
On the client side, we need to fix psql so that it does not check
for \. except when reading data from STDIN (that is, the script
source). We must do that regardless of TEXT/CSV mode or there is
no way to end the COPY short of script EOF. Also, be careful
not to send the \. to the server in that case.
This is a small compatibility break in that other applications
beside psql may need similar adjustment. Also, using an older
version of psql with a v18 server may result in misbehavior
during CSV-mode COPY IN.

Currently, only unnamed prepared statement are supported by psql with
the meta-command \bind. With only this command, it is not possible to
test named statement creation, execution or close through the extended
protocol.
This commit introduces three additional commands:
* \parse creates a prepared statement using the extended protocol,
acting as a wrapper of libpq's PQsendPrepare().
* \bind_named binds and executes an existing prepared statement using
the extended protocol, for PQsendQueryPrepared().
* \close closes an existing prepared statement using the extended
protocol, for PQsendClosePrepared().
This is going to be useful to add regression tests for the extended
query protocol, and I have some plans for that on separate threads.
Note that \bind relies on PQsendQueryParams().
The code of psql is refactored so as bind_flag is replaced by an enum in
_psqlSettings that tracks the type of libpq routine to execute, based on
the meta-command involved, with the default being PQsendQuery(). This
refactoring piece has been written by me, while Anthonin has implemented
the rest.

number of sites serving various purposes. Links to RFCs and BCPs
are now 301 redirected to their new respective IETF sites. Since
this serves no purpose and only adds network overhead, update our

When running a repeat query with \watch in psql, it can be
helpful to be able to stop the watch process when the query
no longer returns the expected amount of rows. An example
would be to watch for the presence of a certain event in
pg_stat_activity and stopping when the event is no longer
present, or to watch an index creation and stop when the
index is created.
This adds a min_rows=MIN parameter to \watch which can be
set to a non-negative integer, and the watch query will
stop executing when it returns less than MIN rows.

With the addition of INHERIT and SET options for role grants,
the historical display of role memberships in \du/\dg is woefully
inadequate. Besides those options, there are pre-existing
shortcomings that you can't see the ADMIN option nor the grantor.
To fix this, remove the "Member of" column from \du/\dg altogether
(making that output usefully narrower), and invent a new meta-command
"\drg" that is specifically for displaying role memberships. It
shows one row for each role granted to the selected role(s), with
the grant options and grantor.
We would not normally back-patch such a feature addition post
feature freeze, but in this case the change is mainly driven by
v16 changes in the server, so it seems appropriate to include it
in v16.

Don't use PSQL_WATCH_PAGER when stdin/stdout are not a terminal.
This corresponds to the restrictions on when other commands will
use [PSQL_]PAGER. There isn't a lot of sense in trying to use a
pager in non-interactive cases, and doing so allows an environment
setting to break our tests.
Also, ignore PSQL_WATCH_PAGER if it is set but empty or all-blank,
for the same reasons we ignore such settings of [PSQL_]PAGER (see
commit 18f8f784c).
No documentation change is really needed, since there is nothing
suggesting that these constraints on [PSQL_]PAGER didn't already
apply to PSQL_WATCH_PAGER too. But I rearranged the text
a little to make it read more naturally (IMHO anyway).

Make the \g, \o, \w, and \copy commands set these variables
when closing a pipe. We missed doing this in commit b0d8f2d98,
but it seems like a good idea.
There are some remaining places in psql that intentionally don't
update these variables after running a child program:
* pager invocations
* backtick evaluation within a prompt
* \e (edit query buffer)

\watch can now be told to stop after N executions of the query.
With the idea that we might want to add more options to \watch
in future, this patch generalizes the command's syntax to a list
of name=value options, with the interval allowed to omit the name
for backwards compatibility.

These are set after a \! command or a backtick substitution.
SHELL_ERROR is just "true" for error (nonzero exit status) or "false"
for success, while SHELL_EXIT_CODE records the actual exit status
following standard shell/system(3) conventions.

Our previous habit of showing the full function body is really
pretty unfriendly for tabular viewing of functions, and now that
we have \sf and \ef commands there seems no good reason why \df+
has to do it. It still seems to make sense to show prosrc for
internal and C-language functions, since in those cases prosrc
is just the C function name; but then let's rename the column to
"Internal name" which is a more accurate descriptor.

This allows an optional "S" modifier to be added to \dp and \z, to
have them include system objects in the list.
Note that this also changes the behaviour of a bare \dp or \z without
the "S" modifier to include temp objects in the list, and exclude
information_schema objects, making them consistent with other psql
meta-commands.

The USER SET flag specifies that the variable should be set on behalf of an
ordinary role. That lets ordinary roles set placeholder variables, which
permission requirements are not known yet. Such a value wouldn't be used if
the variable finally appear to require superuser privileges.
The new flags are stored in the pg_db_role_setting.setuser array. Catversion
is bumped.

This adds a new psql command \bind that sets query parameters and
causes the next query to be sent using the extended query protocol.
Example:
SELECT $1, $2 \bind 'foo' 'bar' \g
This may be useful for psql scripting, but one of the main purposes is
also to be able to test various aspects of the extended query protocol
from psql and to write tests more easily.

Remove no-longer-accurate claim that Windows lacks home directories.
Clarify the text by more clearly distinguishing which statements
reflect hard-wired choices versus which ones reflect overridable
defaults. Update the examples of version-specific file names,
and make them track future version changes by using "&majorversion;"
and "&version;". (BTW, in devel and beta releases this method
correctly says that you can use strings like "16devel" and "15beta4"
as minor version identifiers.)
Back-patch to v15, but not further, with the thought that in older
releases the examples with three-part version numbers still had
some historical relevance. v15 will be the first major release after
the last 9.x branch went out of support.

Since HAVE_UNIX_SOCKETS is now defined unconditionally, remove the macro
and drop a small amount of dead code.
The last known systems not to have them (as far as I know at least) were
QNX, which we de-supported years ago, and Windows, which now has them.
If a new OS ever shows up with the POSIX sockets API but without working
AF_UNIX, it'll presumably still be able to compile the code, and fail at
runtime with an unsupported address family error. We might want to
consider adding a HINT that you should turn off the option to use it if
your network stack doesn't support it at that point, but it doesn't seem
worth making the relevant code conditional at compile time.
Also adjust a couple of places in the docs and comments that referred to
builds without Unix-domain sockets, since there aren't any. Windows
still gets a special mention in those places, though, because we don't
try to use them by default there yet.

The setting controls tha maximum length of the header line in expanded
format output. Possible settings are full, column, page, or an integer.
the default is full, the current behaviour, and in this case the header
line is the length of the widest line of output. column causes the
header to be truncated to the width of the first column, page causes it
to be truncated to the width of the terminal page, and an integer causes
it to be truncated to that value. If the full value is less than the
page or integer value no truncation occurs. If given without an argument
this option prints its current setting.

This commit, in completion of 157f873, forces a ROLLBACK for
--single-transaction only when ON_ERROR_STOP is used when one of the
steps defined by -f/-c fails. Hence, COMMIT is always used when
ON_ERROR_STOP is not set, ignoring the status code of the last action
taken in the set of switches specified by -c/-f (previously ROLLBACK
would have been issued even without ON_ERROR_STOP if the last step
failed, while COMMIT was issued if a step in-between failed as long as
the last step succeeded, leading to more inconsistency).
While on it, this adds much more test coverage in this area when not
using ON_ERROR_STOP with multiple switch patterns involving -c and -f
for query files, single queries and slash commands.
The behavior of ON_ERROR_STOP is arguably a bug, but there was no much
support for a backpatch to force a ROLLBACK on a step failure, so this
change is done only on HEAD for now.

psql --single-transaction is able to handle multiple -c and -f switches
in a single transaction since d5563d7d, but this had the surprising
behavior of forcing a transaction COMMIT even if psql failed with an
error in the client (for example incorrect path given to \copy), which
would generate an error, but still commit any changes that were already
applied in the backend. This commit makes the behavior more consistent,
by enforcing a transaction ROLLBACK if any commands fail, both
client-side and backend-side, so as no changes are applied if one error
happens in any of them.
Some tests are added on HEAD to provide some coverage about all that.
Backend-side errors are unreliable as IPC::Run can complain on SIGPIPE
if psql quits before reading a query result, but that should work
properly in the case where any errors come from psql itself, which is
what the original report is about.

psql, pg_dump, and pg_amcheck share code to process object name
patterns like 'foo*.bar*' to match all tables with names starting in
'bar' that are in schemas starting with 'foo'. Before v14, any number
of extra name parts were silently ignored, so a command line '\d
foo.bar.baz.bletch.quux' was interpreted as '\d bletch.quux'. In v14,
as a result of commit 2c8726c4b0, we
instead treated this as a request for table quux in a schema named
'foo.bar.baz.bletch'. That caused problems for people like Justin
Pryzby who were accustomed to copying strings of the form
db.schema.table from messages generated by PostgreSQL itself and using
them as arguments to \d.
Accordingly, revise things so that if an object name pattern contains
more parts than we're expecting, we throw an error, unless there's
exactly one extra part and it matches the current database name.
That way, thisdb.myschema.mytable is accepted as meaning just
myschema.mytable, but otherdb.myschema.mytable is an error, and so
is some.random.garbage.myschema.mytable.

Historically we've been lax about this, but seeing that we're not
lax in C files, there doesn't seem to be a good reason to be so
in the documentation. Remove the existing occurrences (mostly
though not entirely in copied-n-pasted psql output), and modify
.gitattributes so that "git diff --check" will warn about future
cases.
While at it, add *.pm to the set of extensions .gitattributes
knows about, and remove some obsolete entries for files that
we don't have in the tree anymore.

\dconfig without an argument originally printed all parameters,
but it seems more useful to print only those parameters with
non-default settings. You can easily get the show-everything
behavior with "\dconfig *", but that output is unwieldy and
seems unlikely to be wanted very often.

Plain \dconfig is basically equivalent to SHOW except that you can
give it a pattern with wildcards, either to match multiple GUCs or
because you don't exactly remember the name you want.
\dconfig+ adds type, context, and access-privilege information,
mainly because every other kind of object privilege has a psql command
to show it, so GUC privileges should too. (A form of this command was
in some versions of the patch series leading up to commit a0ffa885e.
We pulled it out then because of doubts that the design and code were
up to snuff, but I think subsequent work has resolved that.)
In passing, fix incorrect completion of GUC names in GRANT/REVOKE
ON PARAMETER: a0ffa885e neglected to use the VERBATIM form of
COMPLETE_WITH_QUERY, so it misbehaved for custom (qualified) GUC
names.

This patch improves tab completion's ability to deal with
valid variant spellings of SQL identifiers. Notably:
* Unquoted upper-case identifiers are now downcased as the backend
would do, allowing them to be completed correctly.
* Tab completion can now match identifiers that are quoted even
though they don't need to be; for example "f<TAB> now completes
to "foo" if that's the only available name. Previously, only
names that require quotes would be offered.
* Schema-qualified identifiers are now supported where SQL syntax
allows it; many lesser-used completion rules neglected this.
* Completion operations that refer back to some previously-typed
name (for example, to complete names of columns belonging to a
previously-mentioned table) now allow variant spellings of the
previous name too.
In addition, performance of tab completion queries has been
improved for databases containing many objects, although
you'd only be likely to notice with a heavily-loaded server.
Authors of future tab-completion patches should note that this
commit changes many details about how tab completion queries
must be written:
* Tab completion queries now deal in raw object names; do not
use quote_ident().
* The name-matching restriction in a query must now be written
as "outputcol LIKE '%s'", not "substring(outputcol,1,%d)='%s'".
* The SchemaQuery mechanism has been extended so that it can
handle queries that refer back to a previous name. Most completion
queries that do that should be converted to SchemaQuery form.
Only consider using a literal query if the previous name can
never be schema-qualified. Don't use a literal query if the
name-to-be-completed can validly be schema-qualified, either.
* Use set_completion_reference() to specify which word is the previous
name to consider, for either a SchemaQuery or a literal query.
* If you want to offer some keywords in addition to a query result
(for example, offer COLUMN in addition to column names after
"ALTER TABLE t RENAME"), do not use the old hack of tacking the
keywords on with UNION. Instead use the new QUERY_PLUS macros
to write such keywords separately from the query proper. The
"addon" macro arguments that used to be used for this purpose
are gone.
* If your query returns something that's not a SQL identifier
(such as an attribute number or enum label), use the new
QUERY_VERBATIM macros to prevent the result from incorrectly
getting double-quoted. You may still need to use quote_literal
in such a query, too.

\getenv fetches the value of an environment variable into a psql
variable. This is the inverse of the \setenv command that was added
over ten years ago. We'd not seen a compelling use-case for \getenv
at the time, but upcoming regression test refactoring provides a
sufficient reason to add it now.

A new option "FOR ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA" in Create/Alter Publication allows
one or more schemas to be specified, whose tables are selected by the
publisher for sending the data to the subscriber.
The new syntax allows specifying both the tables and schemas. For example:
CREATE PUBLICATION pub1 FOR TABLE t1,t2,t3, ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA s1,s2;
OR
ALTER PUBLICATION pub1 ADD TABLE t1,t2,t3, ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA s1,s2;
A new system table "pg_publication_namespace" has been added, to maintain
the schemas that the user wants to publish through the publication.
Modified the output plugin (pgoutput) to publish the changes if the
relation is part of schema publication.
Updates pg_dump to identify and dump schema publications. Updates the \d
family of commands to display schema publications and \dRp+ variant will
now display associated schemas if any.

Allow a pager to be used by the \watch command. This works but isn't
very useful with traditional pagers like "less", so use a different
environment variable. The popular open source tool "pspg" (also by
Pavel) knows how to display the output if you set PSQL_WATCH_PAGER="pspg
--stream".
To make \watch react quickly when the user quits the pager or presses
^C, and also to increase the accuracy of its timing and decrease the
rate of useless context switches, change the main loop of the \watch
command to use sigwait() rather than a sleeping/polling loop, on Unix.
Supported on Unix only for now (like pspg).

We've accumulated quite a mix of instances of "an SQL" and "a SQL" in the
documents. It would be good to be a bit more consistent with these.
The most recent version of the SQL standard I looked at seems to prefer
"an SQL". That seems like a good lead to follow, so here we change all
instances of "a SQL" to become "an SQL". Most instances correctly use
"an SQL" already, so it also makes sense to use the dominant variation in
order to minimise churn.
Additionally, there were some other abbreviations that needed to be
adjusted. FSM, SSPI, SRF and a few others. Also fix some pronounceable,
abbreviations to use "a" instead of "an". For example, "a SASL" instead
of "an SASL".
Here I've only adjusted the documents and error messages. Many others
still exist in source code comments. Translator hint comments seem to be
the biggest culprit. It currently does not seem worth the churn to change
these.
