Arrange to cache the results of catalog lookups across multiple array
operations, instead of repeating the lookups on every call.

functions, since these were for proof-of-concept and not intended to become

datatype is pass-by-reference; neither direction of the implication holds
water. Instead, examine the actual data string to see if it contains
any characters that force us to quote it.

explained nowhere AFAICT.
