It will be sent to the client by the caller. This was the last place
in the server that would attempt to send an error directly, mainly left
untouched by 5.0 refactoring because it is executed only during
thread startup.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
In the old code, when res was greater than 0, it contained an exact
error code, e.g. ER_OUT_OF_RESOURCES or NO SUCH DATABASE,
or ER_HANDSHAKE_ERROR. I don't know the reason why this error code was
ignored, and instead a generic ER_UNKNOWN_COM_ERROR was pushed into the
error stack, but knowing the relaxed attitude towards preserving the error
codes in the old code, I'm inclinded to think that it was a bug.
After this patch, the most specific error message is already pushed,
so calling my_message() again is useless.
If res is < 0, the error used to be already sent. This is not done
by the new code, but will be done later, in the end
of dispatch_command(). When this is done, clear_error() will be called
for us - it is in the first lines of do_command.
To sum up, this change is to remove COM_CHANGE_USER specific error handling
in favor of the standard one employed for all other COM_* commands.

Problem:
'log' and 'log_slow_queries' were "fixed" variables, i.e. they showed up
in SHOW VARIABLES, but could not be used in expressions like
"select @@log". Also, using them in the SET statement produced an
incorrect "unknown system variable" error.
Solution:
Make 'log' and 'log_slow_queries' read-only dynamic variables to make
them available for use in expressions, and produce a correct error
about the variable being read-only when used in the SET statement.

On recent Mac OS X, fcntl(F_FULLFSYNC) is recommended over fsync()

my_sync_dir(): to sync a directory after a file creation/deletion/
renaming; can be called directly or via MY_SYNC_DIR in my_create/
my_delete/my_rename(). No-op except on Linux (see "man fsync" on Linux).

the latter wrote into the settings of the key cache! Problem was that

default TCP port that value actually gets used throughout. if they
didn't configure a value, assume "use a sensible default", which
will be read from /etc/services or, failing that, from the factory
default. That makes the order of preference

- my.cnf, where applicable
- $MYSQL_TCP_PORT environment variable
- /etc/services (unless configured --with-tcp-port)
- default port (--with-tcp-port=... or factory default)

If MYSQL_TCP_PORT defaulted in configure (factory default 3306
at the time of this writing), set MYSQL_TCP_PORT to factory
default, then clear factory default after. That way, we lose no
information, and we can distinguish between "defaulted" and the
pathological case "builder specifically configured a port that
coincides with factory default." This can in theory happen if
builder configures and builds several servers from a script
(--with-tcp-port=3306, --with-tcp-port=3316, --with-tcp-port=3326).
Not all that probable, but much preferable to having more "magic"
happen in the server when we can solve this without any guesswork.

The patch limits read_buffer_size and read_rnd_buffer_size by 2 GB on all platforms for the following reasons:
- I/O code in mysys, code in mf_iocache.c and in some storage engines do not currently work with sizes > 2 GB for those buffers
- even if the above had been fixed, Windows POSIX read() and write() calls are not 2GB-safe, so setting those buffer to sizes > 2GB would not work correctly on 64-bit Windows.

pwrite (overwrite) the last 2 bytes (8191-8192). If crash between
the two operations, this leaves a bitmap page full without its end
marker. A later recovery may try to read this page and find it
exists and misses a marker and conclude it's corrupted and fail.
Changing the chsize to only 8190 bytes: recovery will then find
the page is too short and recreate it entirely.
storage/maria/ma_blockrec.c:
Fix for a bug: when executing a REDO, if the data page is created,
data_file_length was increased before _ma_bitmap_set():
_ma_bitmap_set() called _ma_read_bitmap_page() which, due to the
increased data_file_length, expected to find a bitmap page on disk
with a correct end marker; if the bitmap page didn't exist already
in fact, this failed. Fixed by increasing data_file_length only after
_ma_read_bitmap_page() has created the new bitmap page correctly.
This bug could happen every time a REDO is about creating a new
bitmap page.
