4171483b53 Backport Fix for Bug#24509 - 2048 file descriptor limit on windows needs increasing. 
The patch replaces the use of the POSIX I/O interfaces in mysys on Windows with 
the Win32 API calls (CreateFile, WriteFile, etc). The Windows HANDLE for the open
 file is stored in the my_file_info struct, along with a flag for append mode 
(because the Windows API does not support opening files in append mode in all cases)
The default max open files has been increased to 16384 and can be increased further
by setting --max-open-files=<value> during the server start.

Noteworthy benefit of this patch is that it removes limits from the table_cache size - 
allowing for more simultaneus users

600a283689 Bug #45058 init_available_charsets uses double checked locking 
A client doing multiple mysql_library_init() and
mysql_library_end() calls over the lifetime of the process may
experience lost character set data, potentially even a
SIGSEGV.

This patch reinstates the reloading of character set data when
a mysql_library_init() is done after a mysql_library_end().

8969530cff Bug #45058 init_available_charsets uses double checked locking 
As documented in the bug report, the double checked locking
pattern has inherent issues, and cannot guarantee correct
initialization.

This patch replaces the logic in init_available_charsets()
with the use of pthread_once(3). A wrapper function,
my_pthread_once(), is introduced and is used in lieu of direct
calls to init_available_charsets(). Related defines
MY_PTHREAD_ONCE_* are also introduced.

For the Windows platform, the implementation in lp:sysbench is
ported. For single-thread use, a simple define calls the
function and sets the pthread_once control variable.

Charset initialization is modified to use my_pthread_once().

  Declaration for new function my_pthread_once().

  Logic in init_available_charsets() is simplified.

b125770aaa We are now using Valgrind rather than purify, and have for quite some time. 
Consequently, rename HAVE_purify to HAVE_valgrind, and related changes.
Leave some comments about purify when not clear that they apply also to Valgrind.
Fix redundant IF_VALGRIND declaration.

Misc. small fixes:
 - Fixes for pool-of-threads patch.
 - Fixes for push of PBXT storage engine.
 - mysql-test-run.pl fix.
 - Fix build problem in compile-pentium64-max.

  Fix by using bundled zlib in the build script.

214bd5a121 Bug#43706: libmysqld segfaults when re-intialised 
Bug#44091: libmysqld gets stuck waiting on mutex on initialization

The problem was that libmysqld wasn't enforcing a certain
initialization and deinitialization order for the mysys
library. Another problem was that the global object used
for management of log event handlers (aka LOGGER) wasn't
being prepared for a possible reutilization.

What leads to the hang/crash reported is that a failure
to load the language file triggers a double call of the
cleanup functions, causing an already destroyed mutex to
be used.

The solution is enforce a order on the initialization and
deinitialization of the mysys library within the libmysqld
library and to ensure that the global LOGGER object reset
it's internal state during cleanup.

mysys/my_init.c:
  Deinitialize only if initialized already.
sql/log.cc:
  Reset state.

704b4845aa merge of 5.1-main into 5.1-maria. Myisam->Maria change propagation will follow. 
There were so many changes into mtr (this is the new mtr coming) that I rather
copied mtr from 6.0-main here (at least this one knows how to run Maria tests).
I also fixed suite/maria tests to be accepted by the new mtr.

  adding DBUG_PRINT here, so that we can locate where the warning is issued.

f4d0b4760a Bug#38364: gen_lex_hash segmentation fault in debug build 
Bug#36428: MY_MUTEX_INIT_FAST is used before initialization

On some thread implementations, we need a fake mutex attri-
bute as a placeholder, which we define as a global variable,
"my_fast_mutexattr".  Well. that must be initialized before 
used in any mutexes, and the ordering of initializations in 
the API function  my_init()  was wrong.

Now, put my_thread_global_init(), which initializes the attri-
butes that mutexes require.

32f81bab7d WL#3262 add mutex lock order checking to safemutex (also called safe_mutex_deadlock_detector) 
This writes a warning on stderr if one uses mutex in different order,
like if one in one case would lock mutex in the order A,B and in another case
would lock mutex in the order B,A
This is inspired by and loosely based on the LOCKDEP patch by Jonas
Wrong mutex order is either fixed or mutex are marked with MYF_NO_DEADLOCK_DETECTION
if used inconsistently (need to be fixed by server team)

60d5e90089 Bug#36279 - mysql built with Visual Studio 2005 does not display 
japanese characters.

Fix - removed obsolvete setlocale from my_init.c . In MBCS 
environments it caused unwanted character-to-byte translations
in fputc()  in client code and wrong output as result.

    the initialization of "query_performance_counter" to be bypassed unless there
    was at lest such a key.
  - Cleanup the "registry -> environment variables" from Italian comments,
    remove redundant variables and fix style.
  - Remove function 'setEnvString' and replace it with oneliner 'strxmov'

fc0a25ec49 WL#3071 Maria checkpoint, WL#3072 Maria recovery 
instead of fprintf(stderr) when a task (with no user connected) gets
an error, use my_printf_error(). Flags ME_JUST_WARNING and ME_JUST_INFO
added to my_error()/my_printf_error(), which pass it to
my_message_sql() which is modified to call the appropriate
sql_print_*(). This way recovery can signal its start and end with
[Note] and not [ERROR] (but failure with [ERROR]).
Recovery's detailed progress (percents etc) still uses stderr as they
have to stay on one single line.
sql_print_error() changed to use my_progname_short (nicer display).
mysql-test-run.pl --gdb/--ddd does not run mysqld, because
a breakpoint in mysql_parse is too late to debug startup problems;
instead, dev should set the breakpoints it wants and then "run" ("r").

06d80f1119 Bug #28284: Test "mysqlslap" reports "out of memory" 
When locking a "fast" mutex a static variable cpu_count 
was used as a flag to initialize itself on the first usage 
by calling sysconf() and setting non-zero value.
This is not thread and optimization safe on some 
platforms. That's why the global initialization needs 
to be done once in a designated function.
This will also speed up the usage (by a small bit) 
because it won't have to check if it's initialized on
every call.

Fixed by moving the fast mutexes initialization out of 
my_pthread_fastmutex_lock() to fastmutex_global_init()
and call it from my_init()

Some minor code cleanups
Enable handler errors earlier for better clear text error messages at handler startup / standalone usage.
Don't print NULL strings in my_create_with_symlink();  Fixes core dump when used with --debug

  Partial rewrite to allow REPAIR of BLOCK/PAGE format.
  Repair of BLOCK format rows is for now only done with 'maria_repair()' (= repair through key cache)
  The new logic to repair rows with BLOCK format is:
  
  - Create new, unrelated MARIA_HA of the table
  - Create new datafile and associate it with new handler
  - Reset all statistic information in new handler
  - Copy all data to new handler with normal write operations
  - Move state of new handler to old handler
  - Close new handler
  - Close data file in old handler
  - Rename old data file to new data file.
  - Reopen data file in old handler
