A slave can crash or leak heap content when its master sends a Table_map
event that declares columns whose types need more field metadata than
the event carries. Building its description of the table, the slave
reads past the end of the field metadata the event holds. The bytes
beyond the buffer are decoded as column metadata.
A Table_map event carries a column count, one type byte per column,
and a block of field metadata. A column's type fixes how many metadata
bytes it consumes: two for the string, enum, set, bit, varchar, and
decimal types, one for the blob, float, and high precision temporal
types, none for the rest. The master writes exactly that many bytes
per column, so the metadata block a well formed event carries is the
sum over its columns. The slave sizes the metadata block from the
event and, while building its table_def, walks the columns in order
and reads each type's metadata bytes from that block.
The slave checked only that the metadata block was no larger than two
bytes per column. It never checked the block against the column types
themselves. table_def() then walked every declared column and indexed
the metadata block for each, so a column whose type needed metadata
the block did not hold read past the end of it. A column count large
enough carried that read far past the allocation.
The Table_map reader now sums the metadata the declared column types
consume and rejects the event when the block is smaller than that
sum, so is_valid() reports the event as invalid and the SQL thread
stops with a relay log read failure before any column is decoded. A
block larger than the sum is still accepted, because every consumer
reads only the bytes the types call for. A column type this slave
does not recognize counts as zero in the sum, so Table_map events
from a newer master using such a type still parse. A Table_map whose
metadata cannot cover its column types now stops the slave with an
error instead of reading past the buffer.
Note that the regression test does not crash a regular debug build;
an ASAN build is required to show the invalid memory access. The 24
column table map it injects overruns the metadata allocation by a
bounded amount that lands in mapped heap, which a debug build reads
without faulting and then stops the SQL thread with
ER_SLAVE_CONVERSION_FAILED on the column type mismatch.

One can have data loss in multi-master setups when 1) both masters
update the same table, 2) ALTER TABLE is run on one master which
re-arranges the column ordering, and 3) transactions are binlogged
in ROW binlog_format.
This is because the slave assumes that all columns are in the same
order on the master and slave and all columns on the master also
exists on the slave. This happens even if binlog_row_metadata=FULL is
used. If this is not the case, this will lead to silent data loss.
A new option for slave_type_conversions bit field,
ERROR_IF_MISSING_FIELD, has been added, along with a new error,
ER_SLAVE_INCOMPATIBLE_TABLE_DEF. This allows the user to define if
the slave should abort replication if it is missing some field that
existed on the master. The option is off by default to keep things
compatible with earlier versions.
If a field is missing on the slave and log_warnings >= 1, a warning
will be logged to the error log.
This patch fixes this, when binlog_row_metadata=FULL is used on the
master, by mapping fields with identical names on the master and slave.
If slave has fields that does not exist in the row event, these will
be set to their default value.
The main idea is that we added two conversion tables:
m_tabledef.master_to_slave_map[master_column_index] -> slave_column_index
and m_tabledef.master_to_slave_error[master_column_index] which contains
an error number if the master_column does not exist on the slave or
it is not possible to convert the master data to the slave column.
master_to_slave_error[#] contains 0 if the column exists and is compatible.
General code changes:
- Instead of looping over row fields in the order of slave table
we are instead looping over fields in the order of the binary log.
- We are using table->write_set to know which fields should be updated
on the slave. This is reflected in unpack_row
- We are calling TABLE::mark_columns_per_binlog_row_image() to ensure
that rpl_write_set is properly set. This is needed if the slave also
is doing binary logging.
- Before replication aborted if the master and slave tables were too
different. Now replication is only aborted if the row actually uses
columns that does not exists on the slave (and ERROR_IF_MISSING_FIELD
is used) or uses columns that cannot be converted.
- Instead of giving errors in compatible_with(), used when table is
accessed by first the row event, we are instead giving errors
when we examine a row event and notice that it is accessing
a not existing or not compatible field.
Other code changes:
- Removed conv_table argument from compatible_with() and store it
directly in RPL_TABLE_LIST->m_conv_table
- table_def::compatible_with() returns now 1 on error (not 0).
- Remove m_width and skip arguments from prepare_record() as we are
now using table->write_set() to check which elements need a default
value.
- Moved DBUG_ENTER() to it's proper place (after variable
declarations) in a few functions.
- Some changes in unpack_row():
- Replaced null_mask and null_ptr with an indexed bit check for
simplicity.
- Removed check of rgi == null and table_found which never worked.
- Updated comments to reflect current code.
- Indentation changes as the code now uses 'continue' instead of
'if-else' in the main loop.
- The code to throw away 'extra master fields' is not needed as we
are now looping over fields in binary log, not over fields in
slave table.
- Simplified get_table_data(TABLE *table_arg) by returning found
table_list.
- Errors for row events are now initialized in compatible_with(),
checked in check_wrong_column_usage() and reported in
give_compatibility_error().

Preparation for MDEV-32570. When fragmenting a large row event into
multiple smaller fragment events, each fragment event will have its own
checksum attached, thereby negating the need to also store the checksum
of the overall large event.
The existing code assumes all events will always have checksums, but
this won't be true for the rows events that are re-assembled on the
replicas. This patch prepares for this by splitting the logic which
reads in and creates Log_event objects into two pieces, one which
handles the checksum validation; and the other which reads the raw
event data (without the checksum) and creates the object.
All existing code is unchanged which uses the checksum-assuming version
of the event reader. MDEV-32570 will be the only case which will bypass
the checksum logic, and will directly create its rows log events from
memory without validating checksums (as the checksums will have already
been validated by each individual fragment event).

This is a preparatory commit for pre-computing checksums outside of
holding LOCK_log, no functional changes.
Which checksum algorithm is used (if any) when writing an event does not
belong in the event, it is a property of the log being written to.
Instead decide the checksum algorithm when constructing the
Log_event_writer object, and store it there.
Introduce a client-only Log_event::read_checksum_alg to be able to
print the checksum read, and a
Format_description_log_event::source_checksum_alg which is the
checksum algorithm (if any) to use when reading events from a log.
Also eliminate some redundant `enum` keywords on the enum_binlog_checksum_alg
type.

1. Change m_size to uint. This removes some implicit conversions.
See unpack_row, for instance:
uint max_cols= MY_MIN(tabledef->size(), cols->n_bits);
2. Improve table_def memory layout by reordering columns
Dead code cleanup:
part_info->num_parts usage was wrong and working incorrectly in
mysql_drop_partitions() because num_parts is already updated in
prep_alter_part_table(). We don't have to update part_info->partitions
because part_info is destroyed at alter_partition_lock_handling().
Cleanups:
- DBUG_EVALUATE_IF() macro replaced by shorter form DBUG_IF();
- Typo in ER_KEY_COLUMN_DOES_NOT_EXITS.
Refactorings:
- Splitted write_log_replace_delete_frm() into write_log_delete_frm()
and write_log_replace_frm();
- partition_info via DDL_LOG_STATE;
- set_part_info_exec_log_entry() removed.
DBUG_EVALUATE removed
DBUG_EVALUTATE was only added for consistency together with
DBUG_EVALUATE_IF. It is not used anywhere in the code.
DBUG_SUICIDE() fix on release build
On release DBUG_SUICIDE() was statement. It was wrong as
DBUG_SUICIDE() is used in expression context.
This change is to get rid of randomly failing tests, especially those
that reads random position of the binary log. From looking at the logs
it's clear that some failures is because of a read char (with value >= 128)
is converted to a big long value. Using uchar everywhere makes this much
less likely to happen.
Another benefit is that a lot of cast of char to uchar could be removed.
Other things:
- Removed some extra space before '=' and '+=' in assignments
- Fixed indentations and lines > 80 characters
- Replace '16' with 'element_size' (from class definition) in
Gtid_list_log_event()
Problem:
The logic in store_column_type() with a switch on field type was
hard to follow. The part for MEDIUMINT (MYSQL_TYPE_INT24) was not correct.
It erroneously calculated the precision of MEDIUMINT UNSIGNED
as 7 instead of 8.
A similar hard-to-follow switch doing some type specific calculations
resided in adjust_max_effective_column_length(). It was also wrong for
MEDIUMINT (reported as a separate issue in MDEV-15946).
Solution:
1. Introducing a new class Information_schema_numeric_attributes
2. Adding a new virtual method Field::information_schema_numeric_attributes()
3. Splitting the logic in store_column_type() into virtual
implementations of information_schema_numeric_attributes().
4. In order to avoid adding duplicate code for the integer data types,
adding a new virtual method Field_int::numeric_precision(),
which returns the number of digits.
Additional changes:
1. Adding the "const" qualifier to Field::max_display_length()
2. Moving the code from adjust_max_effective_column_length()
directly to Field::max_display_length().
There was no any sense to have two implementations:
- a set of wrong virtual implementations for Field_xxx::max_display_length()
- additional code in adjust_max_effective_column_length() fixing
bad results of Field_xxx::max_display_length()
This change is safe:
- The code using Field::max_display_length()
in field.cc, sql_show.cc, sql_type.cc is not affected.
- The code in rpl_utility.cc is also not affected.
See a new DBUG_ASSSERT and new comments explaining why.
In the new reduction, Field_xxx::max_display_length() returns
correct results for all integer types (except MEDIUMINT, see below).
Putting implementations of numeric_precision() and max_display_length()
near each other in field.h made the logic much clearer and thus
helped to reveal bad results for Field_medium::max_display_length(),
which returns 9 instead of 8 for signed MEDIUMINT fields.
This problem will be addressed separately (MDEV-15946).
Note, this change is also useful for pluggable data types (see MDEV-4912),
as now a user defined Field_xxx has a way to control what's returned
in INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS.NUMERIC_PRECISION and
INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS.NUMERIC_SCALE by implementing
a desired behavior in Field_xxx::information_schema_numeric_attributes().
Handle string length as size_t, consistently (almost always:))
Change function prototypes to accept size_t, where in the past
ulong or uint were used. change local/member variables to size_t
when appropriate.
This fix excludes rocksdb, spider,spider, sphinx and connect for now.
Storage engine independent support for column compression.
TINYBLOB, BLOB, MEDIUMBLOB, LONGBLOB, TINYTEXT, TEXT, MEDIUMTEXT, LONGTEXT,
VARCHAR and VARBINARY columns can be compressed.
New COMPRESSED column attribute added:
COMPRESSED[=<compression_method>]
System variables added:
column_compression_threshold
column_compression_zlib_level
column_compression_zlib_strategy
column_compression_zlib_wrap
Status variables added:
Column_compressions
Column_decompressions
Limitations:
- the only supported method currently is zlib
- CSV storage engine stores data uncompressed on-disk even if COMPRESSED
attribute is present
- it is not possible to create indexes over compressed columns.
If compiling a non DBUG binary with
-DDBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF asserts will be
changed to printf + stack trace (of stack
trace are enabled).
- Changed #ifndef DBUG_OFF to
#ifdef DBUG_ASSERT_EXISTS
for those DBUG_OFF that was just used to enable
assert
- Assert checking that could greatly impact
performance where changed to DBUG_ASSERT_SLOW which
is not affected by DBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF
- Added one extra option to my_print_stacktrace() to
get more silent in case of stack trace printing as
part of assert.
- Added sql/mariadb.h file that should be included first by files in sql
directory, if sql_plugin.h is not used (sql_plugin.h adds SHOW variables
that must be done before my_global.h is included)
- Removed a lot of include my_global.h from include files
- Removed include's of some files that my_global.h automatically includes
- Removed duplicated include's of my_sys.h
- Replaced include my_config.h with my_global.h
Benefits of this patch:
- Removed a lot of calls to strlen(), especially for field_string
- Strings generated by parser are now const strings, less chance of
accidently changing a string
- Removed a lot of calls with LEX_STRING as parameter (changed to pointer)
- More uniform code
- Item::name_length was not kept up to date. Now fixed
- Several bugs found and fixed (Access to null pointers,
access of freed memory, wrong arguments to printf like functions)
- Removed a lot of casts from (const char*) to (char*)
Changes:
- This caused some ABI changes
- lex_string_set now uses LEX_CSTRING
- Some fucntions are now taking const char* instead of char*
- Create_field::change and after changed to LEX_CSTRING
- handler::connect_string, comment and engine_name() changed to LEX_CSTRING
- Checked printf() related calls to find bugs. Found and fixed several
errors in old code.
- A lot of changes from LEX_STRING to LEX_CSTRING, especially related to
parsing and events.
- Some changes from LEX_STRING and LEX_STRING & to LEX_CSTRING*
- Some changes for char* to const char*
- Added printf argument checking for my_snprintf()
- Introduced null_clex_str, star_clex_string, temp_lex_str to simplify
code
- Added item_empty_name and item_used_name to be able to distingush between
items that was given an empty name and items that was not given a name
This is used in sql_yacc.yy to know when to give an item a name.
- select table_name."*' is not anymore same as table_name.*
- removed not used function Item::rename()
- Added comparision of item->name_length before some calls to
my_strcasecmp() to speed up comparison
- Moved Item_sp_variable::make_field() from item.h to item.cc
- Some minimal code changes to avoid copying to const char *
- Fixed wrong error message in wsrep_mysql_parse()
- Fixed wrong code in find_field_in_natural_join() where real_item() was
set when it shouldn't
- ER_ERROR_ON_RENAME was used with extra arguments.
- Removed some (wrong) ER_OUTOFMEMORY, as alloc_root will already
give the error.
TODO:
- Check possible unsafe casts in plugin/auth_examples/qa_auth_interface.c
- Change code to not modify LEX_CSTRING for database name
(as part of lower_case_table_names)
when replicating old temporal type fields (that don't store
metadata in the binlog), take the precision from
destination fields.
(this fixes the replication failure, crashes were
fixed in a different commit)
* make a local variable for target_table->field[col]
* move an often-used bit function to my_bit.h
* remove a non-static and not really needed trivial comparison
function with a very generic name
There are three Log_event::read_log_event() methods:
1. read the event image from IO_CACHE into String
2. create Log_event from the in-memory event image
3. read the event image from IO_CACHE and create Log_event
The 3rd was reading event image into memory and invoking the 2nd to
create Log_event. Now the 3rd also uses the 1st to read the event image
from IO_CACHE into memory, instead of duplicating its functionality.
- Part 3: Adding mem_root to push_back() and push_front()
Other things:
- Added THD as an argument to some partition functions.
- Added memory overflow checking for XML tag's in read_xml()
Fix was to add a test in Query_log_event::Query_log_event() if we are using
CREATE ... SELECT and in this case use trans cache, like we do on the master.
This avoid using (with doesn't have checksum)
Other things:
- Removed dummy call my_checksum(0L, NULL, 0)
- More DBUG_PRINT
- Cleaned up Log_event::need_checksum() to make it more readable (similar as in MySQL 5.6)
- Renamed variable that was hiding another one in create_table_imp()
The fix is that if the slave has a different integer size than
the master, then they will assume the master has the same signed/unsigned modifier
as the slave.
This means that one can safely change a coon the slave an int to a bigint
or an unsigned int to an unsigned int. Changing an unsigned int to an
signed bigint will cause replication failures when the high bit of the
unsigned int is set.
We can't give an error if the signess is different on the master and slave
as the binary log doesn't contain the signess of the column on the master.
- Changed ER(ER_...) to ER_THD(thd, ER_...) when thd was known or if there was many calls to current_thd in the same function.
- Changed ER(ER_..) to ER_THD_OR_DEFAULT(current_thd, ER...) in some places where current_thd is not necessary defined.
- Removing calls to current_thd when we have access to thd
Part of this is optimization (not calling current_thd when not needed),
but part is bug fixing for error condition when current_thd is not defined
(For example on startup and end of mysqld)
Notable renames done as otherwise a lot of functions would have to be changed:
- In JOIN structure renamed:
examined_rows -> join_examined_rows
record_count -> join_record_count
- In Field, renamed new_field() to make_new_field()
Other things:
- Added DBUG_ASSERT(thd == tmp_thd) in Item_singlerow_subselect() just to be safe.
- Removed old 'tab' prefix in JOIN_TAB::save_explain_data() and use members directly
- Added 'thd' as argument to a few functions to avoid calling current_thd.
Changing the error message to:
"...from type 'decimal(0,?)/*old*/' to type ' 'decimal(10,7)'..."
So it's now clear that the master data type is OLD decimal.
The reason for the failure was a bug in an include file on debian that causes 'struct stat'
to have different sized depending on the environment.
This patch fixes so that we always include my_global.h or my_config.h before we include any other files.
Other things:
- Removed #include <my_global.h> in some include files; Better to always do this at the top level to have as few
"always-include-this-file-first' files as possible.
- Removed usage of some include files that where already included by my_global.h or by other files.

If replication breaks in GTID mode, it is not trivial to determine the GTID of
the failing event group. This is a problem, as such GTID is needed eg. to
explicitly set @@gtid_slave_pos to skip to after that event group, or to
compare errors on different servers, etc.
Fix by ensuring that relevant slave errors logged to the error log include the
GTID of the event group containing the problem event.
(MYSQLBINLOG -V CRASHES WITH THAT BINLOG)
Problem: If slave receives a corrupted row event,
slave server is crashing.
Analysis: When slave is unpacking the row event, it is
not validating the data before applying the event. If the
data is corrupted for eg: the length of a field is wrong,
it could end up reading wrong data leading to a crash.
A similar problem happens when mysqlbinlog tool is used
against a corrupted binlog using '-v' option. Due to -v
option, the tool tries to print the values of all the
fields. Corrupted field length could lead to a crash.
Fix: Before unpacking the field, a verification
will be made on the length. If it falls into the event
range, only then it will be unpacked. Otherwise,
"ER_SLAVE_CORRUPT_EVENT" error will be thrown.
Incase mysqlbinlog -v case, the field value will not be
printed and the processing of the file will be stopped.
